Healing Foods to Help Reset Hormone Imbalance

While on your fertility journey, I’m sure you’ve read plenty about hormone imbalances and how you can change your diet throughout your cycle. It can feel like a chore having to keep track of all these “rules” about simply nourishing your body.

A popular reason women struggle with infertility is due to hormonal imbalances. These imbalances can be caused by a variety of factors, all of which can be very frustrating and difficult to pinpoint. Combine that with trying to master these eating “rules” you’ve read, it can be overwhelming.

When focusing on fertility and hormones, it’s helpful to combine Eastern and Western methods of medicine. Traditional Chinese Medicine sees food as foundation medicine. While it might take a bit more time, it thoroughly impacts all systems of the body.

The West typically focuses on the components of food, such as proteins, carbohydrates and fat. The East also looks at the warming and cooling values of food and the flow of energy of each food. In order to achieve fertility success, looking at your body through a holistic lens will ultimately help your body heal and bring you even closer to your healthy pregnancy.

Focus on your Kidneys

This might sound strange when talking about hormones and fertility, but focusing on nourishing your kidneys is a great place to start when looking to reset your hormones. The kidneys are the roots of the body that have domain over the lower part of your body, including sexual organs and your reproductive system. Here are a few foods you can eat to support your kidneys:

  • chicken, lamb and fish

  • scallions

  • sesame seeds

  • sprouted lentils and black beans

  • ginger and cinnamon

Eating for Your Cycle

Another way to better support your body and your hormones, is to focus on the different phases of your cycle. By doing this, you can specifically and properly nourish your body to help reset your hormones.

In the beginning of your cycle, your menstrual phase is when your uterine lining is shed and progesterone drops. Iron and iodine need to be added in to replace what was lost during your period. Here are a few foods to add during this phase:

  • organic red meat

  • sprouted legumes

  • Vegetables

  • whole grains

  • spirulina and seaweed

  • organic beef liver or organic beef liver capsules

In addition, try the Chinese herb,  Dang Gui. This is helpful for irregular cycles as well as blood circulation. Many Chinese women put the root into chicken soup or can be cooked in water to soften and eaten with rice.

During the luteal phase which is the last phase of your cycle, egg fertilization occurs and the egg implants into the lining if fertilization occurred. If not, the body then prepares for a menstrual cycle. Calcium, zinc and vitamins A & B start to decrease during this time and these are all needed for a healthy menstrual cycle. Here are a few options to add in during this phase:

  • green vegetables

  • sprouted legumes

  • carrots & other yellow vegetables

When your body is properly nourished, it can beautifully heal and regulate itself. Hormone imbalances can be frustrating, but they don’t have to be. Your body is a miraculous healing machine with the right nutrients and tools.
