I wish all women knew that IVF isn’t all it’s cracked up to be. Even when it works, IVF is by no means a cure for infertility. At its best, it’s a temporary fix to a long term problem. At its worst, it’s $20,000 down the drain plus a wild rollercoaster ride of painful emotions.
IVF treatments pump your body full of hormones and damage your endocrine system, affecting your future pregnancies and eventually menopause. The same drugs that are used to hyperstimulate your hormones also crash your thyroid, so you’re essentially just borrowing from Peter to pay Paul. And it’s not even guaranteed that it will work!
For many women considering IVF, your odds of needing to be on thyroid medication for the rest of your life are actually higher than your chance of having a baby.
Don’t get me wrong—I’m not completely against these treatments. In severe cases where a woman’s ovarian function is extremely depleted, they make sense.
What doesn’t make sense is how most fertility doctors treat every single patient the same. They don’t test your thyroid, estrogen, and progesterone levels before prescribing medication. In most cases, everyone just gets the same medications whether they’re needed or not.
