How to Create an Ancestor Altar During the Spring Season
One of the most sacred and intimate practices you can uphold is one where you connect with your ancestors. By creating a shrine or an altar, you’ll not only connect with your higher self but you will also fortify the bond you have with your ancestors and spirit guides. When done regularly, this work is deeply spiritual and grounding.
What’s the Purpose of an Ancestor Altar?
When you create and interact with an ancestral altar, you can gain the following benefits:
Guidance from your higher self and angel guides
Connection with loved ones who have passed away
A sense of calmness and ease
Prepare the Space
You may be wondering, how do I build an altar? Your first step is to choose a space in your home with a table. Make sure that this space gives you access to focus and solitude. Note: This table should be outside of your bedroom or wherever you sleep. Clean or dust off the area/table so that the energy feels fresh and cleansed.
What to Put on Your Ancestor Altar
When you’re new to this practice, feel free to keep it simple. Your altar can always grow and expand. The most important piece to consider is to be in community with your spirit guides and the four elements: fire, water, air and earth.
Fire - usually represented by a candle
Water - rainwater would be fantastic but regular water works too
Air - this can be represented by a feather but since air is all around we can also place an open vessel on the table to hold space for this element
Earth - flowers, cleansed crystals
Photos - images of close family or friends that have passed
And as we prepare for the spring season, you can consider adding:
Springtime flowers such as hyacinth, daffodils or tulips
Eggs to represent birth and renewal
Crystals such as opalite, agate and rose quartz
The Ritual
Before you begin, it’s important to cleanse the space with sage or palo santo. Find yourself in a comfortable seated position and create an intention. Rest within a guided meditation or listen to a sound bath to allow for yourself to be open to the experience. You can then invite your well and healed ancestors into your space. Remember, your intention is much more valuable than the actual items on the altar. Keep a notebook and pen next to you to write down any messages that you may receive. As time goes on and you feel more comfortable, you can adjust your altar to reflect the full moon, a change in season or to celebrate an elders birthday.
